If you came from a routine of calorie counting you probably see fat as a taboo. But although the fat in our bodies and the fat in our food are in theory similar, they are in reality quite different.

The essenial fats situated in a variety of foods are quite essential to health and body function. Fat contains 9 calories per gram. This is the highest calorie of any food there is out there. This is why many diet programs underline that we should limit our fat intake.

However i believe it is saturated fats not essential fats that are the culprits and the ones that should be eliminated from our diet.

There are many different fats that the body uses in many different ways. Some are called saturated fats and others are called essential fats. The conversion of these essential fats into subtances that can be used internally is dependent on several enzymes. These enzymes require speciffic nutrients to work effeciently. Also those fats that are deemed non essential in our bodies have a role to play as well. but these saturated fats are not required in any great amounts. A plus for fat is that it amounts to the satisfaction of eating.

When we eat fat we produce a substance called galanin, which increases our desire to eat more fat. This is the reason we crave fatty food and that, they are so pleasureable to eat.. Luckily this also happens when we eat essential fats so they should form the bulk of our diet.

It is known that a diet that supplies not more than 30 percent of energy from fat is the best for weight loss. So if you supply about 20 percent of essential fats to your diet should add to the satisfaction of your eating experience. Also a major benefit will be thatĀ  the rate at which the glycogen is broken down will be much slower than if it where saturated fats. This will provde more energy for longer.

Overall, the fats that are naturally found in fish (such as salmon, mackerel, tuna, trout, eel, and sardines), nuts, olives, and seeds are thoseĀ  most benerficial to your diet. however, dont over do these foods. Keep an eye on how much you are eating, and aim to eat no more than a palmful of nuts daily and fish about four times a week.

All these foods mentioned are good valuable essential fats in their most natural form. In addition the oils derived from these foods are beneficial in small quantities. Choose cold pressed, good quality oils as the basis for marinades and salad dressings.

Avoid cooking with these oils at high temperatures so as to preserve their nutritional values.
